Off Mare Island, San Francisco Bay, California

The Indy was commissioned in 1932, and as FDR's Ship of State, in 1936 carried him on his Good Will Tour of South America. The Indy was chosen to carry components of the first atomic bombs from Mare Island, California, to Tinian Island in the Western Pacific. After off-loading, the Indy proceeded to Guam, then to Leyte Gulf. She was struck by two Japanese torpedos just after midnight, 30 July 1945, and sunk in about twelve minutes. Some years later, Bryan Munson's mother was told by a survivor that the last he saw of Bryan, he was at his battle station. It is believed he went down with the ship.
